Is There Natural Relief For Signs of Menopause

The symptoms and signs of menopause can be difficult for many women. It can become a roller-coaster ride of emotions and physical symptoms that are governed by the hormonal imbalance and natural chemical variations that occur during the 'change of life'. But there are some worthwhile natural remedies that can alleviate much of the discomfort, mood swings, hot-flashes and so on associated with this challenging period.

Amongst herbal remedies for menopause there are some herbs that are suggested for alleviating the aggravation of the most typical symptoms and seem to be effective for many who try such supplements.

It is also acknowledged that Vitamin E might help with signs of menopause on several fronts. In fact Vitamin E is well known as a powerful antioxidant. But as to whether it can help prevent hot flashes, studies as long ago as the 1940's suggested it may help relieve the hot flush and also post-menopausal vaginal dryness, and it has been popularly employed as a supplement for that purpose ever since then.

Derivatives from soy have also been helpful in countering signs of menopause, as they contains natural plant estrogens called phytoestrogens. Although phytoestrogens are weaker than human estrogens they behave similarly in the human body. In the body, phytoestrogens help balance a woman's estrogen level by attaching themselves to the body's estrogen receptor sites. When attached, phytoestrogens can decrease estrogen levels in perimenopausal women and increase estrogen levels in postmenopausal women.

One of the best known herbs for menopause symptoms is the root of Black Cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa). Indeed the primary use of Black Cohosh extract is for alleviation of menopausal symptoms. It has been widely researched, especially in Europe, for its ability to alleviate the symptoms associated with menopause. BUT NOTE: While black cohosh is generally considered safe, people with liver disease or a family history of liver disease should always consult their physician before taking black cohosh or supplements that inclde this herb.

Similarly reputed to assist in reducing symptoms of menopause is Turnerna diffusa better known as Damiana leaf. This yellow-flowering shrub typically grows in climates that are hot and humid, including Central and South America, and in the state of Texas. Damaiana has historically been used as an aphrodisiac and has been claimed to induce euphoria. However, scientific research seems to have discredited the claim.

But Damiana is indicated to relieve anxiety and induce relaxation. Those suffering from sexual difficulties resulting from anxiety or other emotional stress (such as may be experienced as a one of the signs of menopause) could benefit from supplementation with this herb.
